Why small groups? Group counseling is an efficient and effective way to meet students’ academic, career, social/emotional developmental and situational needs. Group counseling makes it possible for students to achieve healthier academic and personal growth in a rapidly changing global society. Group counseling is an integral part of a comprehensive school counseling program and should be included in comprehensive school counseling programs and supported by school administrators and school districts. The school counselor’s training in group process benefits students, families, school staff and administration. Group counseling has a positive effect on academic achievement and personal growth.(ASCA.)

The group will focus on empowerment skills including assertiveness, social interactions, positive attitude, friendship issues etc. SMART GIRLS/ GUYS Groups Smart-Girl / Guy is a fun, activity-based program that inspires adolescents to become confident, capable and self-reliant. Small groups of kids are led by two Guides, usually teachers. That help teach skills on how to navigate issues with friends, family, and teachers. |
Family changesI am planning to start a Family Changes group. The group will meet for approximately six weeks for 30 minutes at a time. The group will focus on empowerment skills including assertiveness, social interactions, positive attitude, and discussions on family changes. For example divorce. These groups help normalize the changes and help students recognize that they are not the only ones that have these kinds of life situations going on, which allows the students to feel a sense of connectedness to others.
